Authorities have shut parts of the North West Coastal Highway after a bushfire sparked and surged north of Geraldton on Sunday morning.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued an emergency warning to those travelling on and east of the highway.
The warning also applies to an area west of Dillistone Road, between Nanson-Howatharra and Wells roads in parts of Howatharra and White Peak in the shire of Chapman Valley.
DFES said the bushfire was moving in a westerly direction, was out of control and unpredictable.
Burning embers were likely to be blown around homes, they said, with properties in Nanson-Howatharra Road, Olsen Road, Wells Road, North West Coastal Highway and Coronation Beach Road under threat by fire.

The roads closed include Nanson-Howatharra Road and the North West Coastal Highway between Nanson-Howatharra Road and Four Forty Roadhouse.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully because of smoke.
