Release Date, Cast & More

Zack Snyder is back with a massive sci-fi epic set in a galaxy far, far away. In the anticipated interstellar film Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire, a group of farmers on an isolated moon (known as Veldt) is attacked by forces of the Motherworld. Learn all about Rebel Moon and how to watch the film below.

In Rebel Moon part one, Sofia Boutella stars as Kora, a former Imperium soldier who is now living on the peaceful farming moon of Veldt. However, she’s forced to acknowledge her violent past when wicked admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) touches down on Veldt on the orders of Balisarius, the Imperium’s tyrannical leader. Kora has to gather a group of warriors to protect Veldt from the Motherworld’s unimaginable terror.

The concept for Rebel Moon derives from an idea Snyder (Justice League, Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman) had in film school in the 1980s, imagining Magnificent Seven or Seven Samurai set in space. While working on Man of Steel in 2012, he pitched an earlier version of Rebel Moon as a Star Wars story to Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

“I thought that Star Wars was in a vulnerable state, so I thought I had a chance,” the director told
The Hollywood Reporter
. Snyder wanted the film to be R-rated, but when Disney announced that it was purchasing Lucasfilm, he knew that his pitch was dead. Ultimately, Rebel Moon landed at Netflix with a two-part deal unrelated to the Star Wars franchise. Now both films will receive R-rated expansions (the release dates of both explicit versions have not been revealed).

Synder explained to Tudum that Rebel Moon’s mythology “will be on steroids.”

“There’s a lot of stuff that I can’t wait for people to experience and enjoy because we had a great time making it. But I think it’s really this opportunity to sort of dig into a new mythology and to dork out a little bit on the edges of this universe, because we’ve done a lot of work to make them worth getting into,” he also said in the interview. “Because there’s an answer in there. It’s not random, it’s not just because. I find it fun, so I hope fans do too.”

When does Rebel Moon come out on Netflix?

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire will premiere on Netflix on December 21 at 10 p.m. ET or 7 p.m. PT.

Who is the cast of Rebel Moon?

Actress Sofia Boutella stars as Kora, a villager forced to leave Veldt to fight against the Imperium. She’s joined by Charlie Hunnam, who takes on the role of Kai, a mercenary pilot whose starship, the Tawau-Class freighter, will aid in Kora’s mission. Also along for the ride is Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, a Veldt farmer comfortable on his quiet moon in the far corner of the galaxy.

On the enemy side, Ed Skrein portrays the main villain in the film: Admiral Atticus Noble. Noble is an Imperium enforcer who spearheads the take on Veldt. Djimon Hounsou also stars as General Titus, a gladiator once on the dark side.

However, convincing from Kora and her team encouraged him to fight against the very Motherworld that molded him into who he is today.

Also in Rebel Moon is Staz Nair as the noble indentured servant Tarak; Doona Bae as the cyborg sword master Nemesis; Ray Fisher as the insurgent warrior Darrian Bloodaxe, and more.

Will there be a second Rebel Moon movie?

If you want more of Rebel Moon, you’re in luck. Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver will arrive on Netflix on April 19, 2024, a few months after the first part’s release. Netflix has not yet announced the exact timing of the film’s release.

As for what will come in part two, series star Skrein told GamesRadar+ that Synder wanted Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver to feel like Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war thriller.
