The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have reminded grant recipients of important information for 2023, including safety tips when it’s the next collection date and how to access your social grant easier than before.

Changes to the social grant system have been introduced during the year, including the extended expiry date for cards.

Social grant recipients should also note that cash points will be phased out for the next year, with the majority of grants paid to recipient bank accounts.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administrates social grants for those in need, including the Disability Grant, Pensioners (Older Persons) Grant, and R350-SRD Grant.

For the end of the year, they have reminded social grant recipients to be aware of safety tips when collecting (or spending) grants. Criminals often know that it’s grant day, too.

The agency have also reminded recipients that Postbank payment points will be phased out, with recipients asked to update their banking details for easier future grant payments.

The SASSA gold card for 2024

Gold cards are one of the ways to collect social grants, and the expiry dates for valid cards have been extended well into the next year.

While it was previously thought that cards would expire and need renewal by December, the deadline has been extended – and grant recipients should still be able to use their cards in future.

Changes for SASSA grant recipients

Other changes for social grant recipients include the change in Postbank cash payments, which will make way for electronic payments to ensure the safety of recipients and staff.

Social grant recipients are also reminded to report any grant fraud or crime to the relevant authorities.
