Famed rapper Yo Gotti’s brother “Big Jook” was killed during a shooting outside a restaurant in Memphis on Saturday in what police are calling a targeted attack, according to multiple reports.
Memphis police were flagged down regarding reports of gunshots outside Perignons Restaurant & Event Center around 4:15 p.m where two men were shot.
One victim, Anthony “Big Jook” Mims, was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Fox 13.
A second individual was taken to the same hospital in a private car, before being airlifted to Regional One Health in Memphis in critical condition.
Memphis Deputy Police Chief Paul Wright said both victims were at the restaurant for a repast service.
According to TMZ, Mims, the older brother of the “I Am” rapper, had attended a funeral service for a relative in the area earlier in the day
Police have not identified any of the suspects, and no arrests have been made.
“We do feel that the individual that was shot was possibly targeted by the suspect,” Wright said during a press conference.
Police couldn’t make a connection to the rapper while the investigation is still in the preliminary stages.
Big Jook’s Instagram page advertises his brother’s record label, CMG the Label, also known as the Collective Media Group, and has appeared in several music videos released by the label, but mostly dealt with the business side.
It is not known if Yo Gotti was with Big Jook at the time of the shooting, and he has not shared any statement regarding his brother’s death.
Yo Gotti, whose real name is Mario Sentell Giden Mims, hit the rapping world as Lil Yo with his debut album “Youngsta’s On a Come Up” in 1996.
He would later change his stage name to Yo Gotti and has been nominated for several BET Hip Hop awards, including Album of the Year for “I Am” in 2014.
