Celtic transfer decision on the horizon as ‘third Serie A side enter race’ for defender

THREE clubs are now bidding to take Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke to Italy, a report has claimed.

Lecce and Genoa have already been noted admirers of the Swedish stopper, who joined Brendan Rodgers’ side in the summer.

However he has been unable to force his way into the first-team with Liam Scales proving a stand-out at centre-half.

That, and injury, has left him kicking his heels on the sidelines though he did rise from the bench to hit the Hoops’ winner in their long-awaited Champions League win against Feyenoord last month.

Lecce were keen on a loan move for the 23-year-old international and were joined by Genoa and now Verona could again look to Scotland for defensive cover.

They signed Josh Doig from Hibs and could again hunt the SPFL for Celtic’s out-of-favour stopper, according to the Daily Record.

The Hoops have so far only added Nic Kuhn to their squad – signing the £3m winger from Rapid Vienna this week, but Brendan Rodgers is in the market for more.

Reports in England have also placed more emphasis on their call over Lagerbielke with Cameron Carter-Vickers linked to three sides south of the border.

The Hoops hierarchy have been worried about interest in Matt O’Riley this year but now, according to SBI Soccer, a trio of clubs could try to tempt the American back to the Premier League.

West Ham, Brentford and Nottingham Forest are all said to be interested in the centre-back and it’s claimed those at Celtic Park are bracing themselves for at least one formal bid.

Hammers boss David Moyes knows Scottish football well while Brentford and Forest have also shown a willingness to spend their cash north of the border.

Indeed, the Bees did business with Celtic recently when they signed Kristoffer Ajer for £13.5m in the summer of 2021.

Forest are in hot water with the EPL for breaching profit and sustainability rules but former Rangers chief Ross Wilson could look to cut a deal that works for both parties, with Scotland international Scott McKenna on the transfer list at the City Ground.

A switch to Forest for CCV could also see him team up with USA international colleague Matt Turner.
