Matric Results: KZN’s top performing districts

On Friday, the long wait was finally over for the country’s public school matriculants as they received their results. KwaZulu-Natal’s matrics manages to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

KZN, was the surprise performer as it leapfrogged past the Western Cape and Gauteng to finish second behind the Free State.

UMKHANYAKUDE LEADS THE PACK

Nestled in the north, bordering Mozambique and Eswatini, uMkhanyakude District was announced as the province’s top performing district and the only one in the province to achieve 90%.

The district was also among the top five districts in the country.

  • Umlazi- 86.01%.
  • Pinetown- 85.6%.
  • uMgungundlovu District- 85.06%.
  • King Cetshwayo District- 83.4%.
  • uThukela District- 82.93%.

IMPROVEMENT IN THE STANDARD OF PASS RATE

According to the provincial education department, the class of 2023 improved the province’s bachelor pass from 69 849 in 2022 to 72 099.

Education MEC Mbali Frazer says the higher bachelor passes places the matriculants at a better chance at pursuing tertiary education.

“I want to emphasise that our aim as the Department is to see fewer and fewer of our candidates exit the system with higher certificates because we know that bachelor passes place them in a better position to pursue their studies and other opportunities post-matric level,” said MEC for Education, Ms Mbali Frazer.

The Class of 2023 also recorded 43 769 diploma passes while the number of higher certificates decreased from 22 560 in 2022 to 20 435 in 2023.
