EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, is strengthening its presence in Mexico with the opening of two production plants in the northwest of the country, both developed this January. The Franco-Italian conglomerate invested $300 million in the two factories.
An event led by Giorgio Striano and Norbert Gorny, co-directors of the company’s operations, marked the official launch of the “Eliot” integrated laboratory (EssilorLuxottica Integrated Optical Facility in Tijuana) in Baja California, a complex valued at $172 million. This facility will use advanced manufacturing techniques to produce up to an additional 10 million prescription eyeglasses per year.
According to local government data, it is estimated that over a five-year period, “Eliot” will generate up to 2500 direct jobs with highly skilled personnel.
It’s worth noting that the new plant located in El Florido becomes EssilorLuxottica’s second facility in Tijuana.
In addition to Baja California, EssilorLuxottica representatives ventured to Chihuahua to inaugurate a $130 million plant located in the Bafar Industrial Park. This complex will manufacture lenses and frames using state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible, and innovative processes that prioritize water conservation and waste utilization.
The plant, which will generate 2000 jobs, is designed as a smart factory that employs modern automation, production, and cybernetic systems to enhance employee safety, reduce waste, and maintain product quality.
EssilorLuxottica was born in 2018 following the merger of the Italian Luxottica and the French Essilor. The luxury eyewear manufacturer revealed in its latest report for the third quarter of 2023 that it had increased its revenue by 6.2% in Latin America compared to the same period in 2022, reaching €377 million.
