My clear memory of my first day of school was seeing a lot of other kids crying — and being proud that I was holding it in!

Advice: The first day of school can be a nerve-wracking experience. So to kids starting school for the first time today – be brave, because you’re going to have a great time. You’ll make friends, you’ll learn something new every day, and you’ll have fun. Listen to your teachers, and make your parents proud.

My mum tells me she was the one who needed consoling on the day I started school. I was so keen to go I ran off and left her feeling sad.

Advice: So my advice is for parents… don’t be hurt if your new schooler just wants to get in there and ignores you!

My first memory of starting school in 1960 is that it was very traumatic. My father had recently died in an air crash and my mother was too distraught to take me, that task being delegated to my Aunty Gwen.

Advice: My advice to kids starting school would be that teachers are like judges; whatever you may think, just obey them, it will make your life a lot easier in the long run.

I remember squeezing my mum’s hand so tight as she was leaving and I also remember the smell of my new lunch box and having to wear my new black Clarke’s school shoes for the first time.

Advice: The first day of school can be scary — leaving mum and dad, meeting new friends, listening to your new teacher. But, scary as it is, walk tall, put a big smile on your face and have fun learning and meeting your new friends. You might meet your best friend for life and you will learn something new every day. How cool is that?
