Fringe Perth review: WAAPA creatives debut performance in passionate Fringe show Dance after Death

Local actors with a freshly devised script written by a recent WAAPA Diploma of Acting graduate.

Listen, it was hard not to go into this performance space being super critical, as we both knew at least one member of the cast and theatre is what we know.

We both think the script had a great dialogue, which can be the hardest thing to navigate especially for new scriptwriters. The text was very digestible and easily portrayed by our actors on stage.

However, Sarria believes 2 characters were perhaps given more stage time than the plot required of them. Their story arc seemed disconnected to the overall plot and really only added to scenes where they were in a group setting.

Sarria liked the idea of having a friend group break up over an event, ostracizing one member, but found the event in question lacking. Not the portrayal, which was convincing, but the event.

That’s not to say it wasn’t watchable. Art, the playwright, was electric on stage and captivated attention whilst up there. Caitlin Green had a beautiful monologue transporting us onto the water with her in her kayak.

We shared a favourite moment, the last monologue portrayed by the playwright was incredibly moving and very active. We felt very connected to him and the entire audience pivoted as he ran across the stage.

Amanda also enjoyed the ‘group monologues’ wherein all actors performed lines of the same monologue. They were able to keep their own characterisation and intent whilst not dropping the rhythm of the piece.

Should We Have Watched That?

Yes. It’s great to see young local creatives making something they’re passionate about.

Three Words: Debut, local, non-linear.
