What’s passing and what’s failing on Aussie TV this week

So much TV — so little time!

This week we’re all about the excellent gameplay on Survivor, obsessed with Naomi Watts’ bouffant hairdo in Feud: Capote Vs The Swans, excited to see more of Mr & Mrs Smith, discovering Loudermilk and cheering on one seriously talented WA contestant.

A Australian Survivor (Ten)

Full props to this year’s contestants, who have so far managed to pull off not one but TWO epic blindsides — and we’re only in week one! The first saw pocket rocket Frankie given the boot, while WA’s own Kirby Bentley managed to orchestrate the second epic take-down, this time of Peta from “The Cuddle Crew”. If this is a taste of things to come, then sign me up! A cracking start.

Not usually a huge fan of producer Ryan Murphy’s oeuvre, but I was instantly drawn to the second in his Feud series. It details the falling out between literary icon Truman Capote and a bevy of high-society dames. Tom Hollander plays Truman (he’s absolutely terrific) and the series also stars Calista Flockhart, Chloe Sevigny, Diane Lane and Naomi Watts, whose hair is truly something to behold. Hooked.

A– Mr & Mrs Smith (Prime Video)

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play the title roles in this remake, as two strangers who sign on with a mysterious company to act as husband and wife spies. I can’t wait to see where this goes — episode one’s totally unexpected closing moments left me well and truly excited.

B Loudermilk (Netflix)

I have a rule: if two people tell me to watch something in a week, I am duty-bound to check it out. That’s how I stumbled across this half-hour comedy about a drug and alcohol counsellor. Turns out I’m not the only one: despite the fact it was released back in 2017, the show, recently added to Netflix, is hovering in the top 10. Worth discovering.

B+ Australian Idol (Seven)

I’ve been quite impressed with this year’s crop of contestants. I’m also loving seeing Marcia Hines back on the judging panel. She was born for that role! And, dare I say it, even Kyle Sandilands seems likeable this season, sandwiched between Hines and fellow judge Amy Shark. Particularly excited to see how far WA’s own Drea Onamade goes in the competition — she’s phenomenal!
