Fringe Perth review: Sean off Shotgun’s controversial humour and infectious laugh reels in audience

So Sean, we learned, is wonderful. We needed to warm up a little to him but once we got there, we had a good time.

Comedy is a tricky thing to review, the experience is heavily dependent on the audience. Laughter grows and with a solid crowd, laughter is infectious.

In saying that, we did have some laughs with Sean. We think he deserves a larger audience though. We felt moments of uncertainty, and perhaps if his set was in a different order we wouldn’t have felt the discomfort.

Comedians are political by nature, even amid economic depressions and war there are comedians with an idea to share, and so when one brings up their approval of America’s gun-loving, we did expect a complete reversal in the punchline. We didn’t get it.

Not to say some of his gun-related content wasn’t funny, it was. There’s a great bit about Trump in there that we cackled at.

He offers little tidbits of advice too; like what medical emergency will get you to the front of the queue at the E.R., what not to say to people from Milwaukee, how to craft with egg cartons…

We love seeing people on stage have fun, not taking themselves too seriously. Sometimes Sean couldn’t get the joke out cleanly because he was already laughing.

As we said earlier, laughter is infectious, and we laughed at his enjoyment of his own joke.
