Concerns over Scheduling of NEET MDS 2024: Students Petition Supreme Court for Postponement |

NEW DELHI: Amidst concerns over the scheduling of NEET MDS 2024, students have initiated legal action, petitioning the Supreme Court for a postponement. With mounting pressure, they argue that more time is needed for adequate preparation. Seeking fairness and equal opportunity, students hope for a favourable resolution from the judiciary.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Master of Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) exam 2024, initially slated for February 9, 2024, has been rescheduled to March 18, 2024.
Dissatisfaction looms among many candidates due to the decision to postpone the NEET PG 2024 exam from March 3 to July 7, which they deem discriminatory, particularly when compared with the NEET MDS exam. Advocating for parity, candidates assert that historically, NEET MDS exams have been conducted concurrently with NEET PG, prompting a plea for alignment with the NEET PG schedule to ensure sufficient preparation time.
This sentiment arises from the perceived disparity in treatment between the two exams, raising questions about fairness and equity in the examination scheduling process.
A group of ineligible aspirants has lodged a petition with the Supreme Court, advocating for the postponement of the NEET MDS 2024 exam to July, aligning it with the NEET PG schedule, to allow for adequate preparation time. The Supreme Court has provisionally scheduled the case regarding the postponement for February 16. Eleven petitioners initially filed the plea on February 8. According to the Supreme Court’s official website, case 6344/2024 was filed on February 8 at 5:11 PM and is tentatively slated for hearing on February 16, 2024, with petitioner advocate Sumanth Nookala representing the aspirants.
Meanwhile, expressing dissatisfaction with the scheduled NEET MDS 2024 exam date, aspiring candidates have initiated a Twitter campaign employing hashtags like #Postponeneetmds2024toJULY, #postponeneetmds2024tilljuly, #NEETMDS2024POSTPONEMENT, and #POSTPONENEETMDS2024.
Candidates noted that the exam counselling coincides with NEET PG, resulting in wasted time for aspirants until the counselling begins in July after the March 18 exam. Advocating for the cause, they highlighted that approximately 8,000 candidates are rendered ineligible due to internship cutoff dates.
Based on information from two online petition sources, over 8,800 aspirants have signed, echoing the concerns of numerous MDS 2024 candidates. Despite making multiple appeals to various authorities, including the National Medical Commission (NMC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), and Dental Council of India (DCI), no tangible outcomes were achieved. Consequently, they felt compelled to seek redressal through the Supreme Court.
