A Marriage Contract Might Redeem A Soul In The K-Drama ‘My Demon’

Do Do-hee is not the type of woman who generally asks for favors and the arrogant Jung Gu-won is not someone she would normally turn to. But one night on a misty road she cries out for help and miraculously Gu-won responds. He’s ready to make a deal and save her from sure death, but despite her immediate danger, she won’t agree unless she knows his terms.

That’s a good thing because Gu-won—played bewitchingly by Song Kang—is an evil spirit. The deal he wants to make could end up with him controlling her soul. Gu-won preys on those with little hope and he’s collected the souls of some desperate individuals through the centuries. Preying on humans is a fun game and he celebrates his acquisitions by sampling some first-rate cake. Do-hee, played confidently by Kim You-jung won’t be so eager to surrender her soul. As the adopted daughter of a powerful businesswoman; she’s a chaebol princess and used to getting her way.

What usually happens when two people who always get their way meet? Such encounters usually prompt fireworks—and this meet-cute is no exception. And while Gu-won seems to be the most powerful of the two, having supernatural skills, he loses those abilities when he’s around Do-hee. Even though he looks down on humans, he learns he must enter into a contract marriage with Do-hee to protect his own existence.

This SBS fantasy romance has a droll playful sense of humor, with plenty of snappy dialogue, which makes the paranormal premise enjoyable. Although there are roadblocks to them growing closer—possibly the absence of Gu-won’s soul—it’s obvious that these two beautiful, equally stubborn characters are soulmates.

Gu-won is charming enough to convince most women to part with their souls, but perhaps not Do-hee. At least not quickly. Her effect on his powers lends a different dynamic to their interactions. Complicating things is the fact that Do-hee’s adoptive mother wants her to marry. Is Do-hee willing to make a deal with the devil and wed an evil spirit, just to please her mother and possibly one day control the company? Could it be any worse than making a strategic match for money and power? Women have occasionally reformed a rogue boyfriend. Is taming an evil spirit not a similar endeavor. Gu-won might not be as bad as he seems, once he learns some manners.

And Do-hee might make good use of him anyway. She seems to have a lot of enemies.

Song Kang can also be seen this year in the second season of the monster drama Sweet Home. He previously appeared in Navillera, Nevertheless, Love Alarm and Forecasting Love and Weather. Kim Yoo-jung can be seen in the dramas Lovers of the Red Sky, Backstreet Rookies and Love in the Moonlight, as well as the film 20th Century Girl. My Demon also stars Kim Hae-sook as Do-hee’s adoptive mother and Lee Sang-yi as Do-hee’s adoptive cousin. The drama currently airs on Netflix
