We first revealed the highly experienced Warnock was the frontrunner to replace Barry Robson after he was sacked last week.

Initial talks have since gone smoothly – with the former Sheffield United and QPR boss ready to come in on a short term contract.

As yet no deal has been struck with final negations still to be concluded.

But Dons chairman Dave Cormack hopes Warnock will be named before Tuesday night’s clash with Rangers at Ibrox.

Aberdeen will then look to make a long-term appointment in the summer.

Man of many clubs Warnock owns property in Scotland and has never hidden his desire to work north of the border. He could yet take a bow in Scottish football and add the Dons to his lengthy managerial CV.

The veteran has held 19 separate jobs in management and has even had two spells in charge of QPR, Huddersfield and Crystal Palace since his first start at Gainsborough Trinity in 1980.

Warnock was an early leader in the bookmakers’ markets on Wednesday in the aftermath of Robson’s sacking and a 1-1 draw with Dundee.

But he was on the drift on Friday – and dramatically overtaken by Neil Lennon.

The former Hibs and Celtic boss shortened to odds-on with bookies’ BetVictor despite being in the running for the vacant Republic of Ireland job and holding talks with FAI officials last week.

He had started as a 16/1 shout before a flurry of bets saw his figures fall.

Alex Neil has been a steady third favourite for the post but the English veteran now looks set to step up and take the reins from caretaker boss Peter Leven.

Leven steered the Dons to a 1-1 draw with league leaders Celtic on Saturday and the Reds head to Glasgow to face Rangers in the second half of their Old Firm double-header this Tuesday night.

Rangers could go joint top of the Premiership with a win – but Ibrox boss Philippe Clement is refusing to consider the league table until MAY.
