Clueless star Alicia Silverstone sparked serious concerns for her wellbeing after posting a TikTok which has since gone viral.
The American actress posted a video to social media after discovering a plant she could not identify and deciding to eat it while out on a stroll in England.
The short clip captioned “What the heck is this!? I’m in England and can’t figure it out” opens with Silverstone giving viewers a good look at the small, seedy, orange-coloured fruit that already had a bite taken out of it.
“I just bit into it because I was on the street and we were discussing whether this was a tomato or not,” she said.
“It is definitely not because look at these leaves… so what the heck is this?
“I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this but it’s almost like a pepper, does anyone know what this is?”
Silverstone’s Instagram comments reflected a mixture of shock, alarm and confusion.
“Imagine looking outside your window and Alicia Silverstone is eating your plants. 😂😍” one user joked.
“ALICIA! Stop eating mystery veggies out of someone else’s street garden!” another warned.
“Are you just eating out of random people’s yards????” a third probed.
Social media users identified the mystery plant, suggesting it was the Jerusalem Cherry also known as Solanum pseudocapsicum.
According to the Queensland Poisons Information Centre all parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the unripe fruits.
“If plant or fruit is eaten, early symptoms can include fever, sweating, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and increased heart rate.
“Symptoms are delayed for several hours and can persist for days. Death has been reported.”
Silverstone, forced to debunk spreading rumours she’d fallen ill after eating the cherry, made a humorous Instagram update.
“Alive and well! Don’t worry… I didn’t swallow 😉😛”.
