However, thanks to the domination of Mamelodi Sundowns in recent seasons, supporters of Amakhosi and the Buccaneers have been resigned to hoping to finish the season ahead of their cross-town rivals.
In the 27 seasons to date since the professional era of the PSL commenced in 1996/97, Kaizer Chiefs have finished the season ahead of Orlando Pirates on 14 occasions, with the Buccaneers claiming the honours 13 times.

Both sides have lifted the league title on four occasions, but Orlando Pirates haven’t done so since the 2011/12 season, while Kaizer Chiefs last tasted success on 2014/15.

A look at the current DStv Premiership log shows that another close battle is in store this season.
Orlando Pirates are in fifth place with 25 points from 16 matches this season – and have completed their commitments for the year.
Kaizer Chiefs are in sixth place with 24 points after 16 matches this season have also completed their matches for 2023.
