AFL great Matthew Lloyd caught up in Haileybury College’s footy party scandal

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has been caught up in the fallout over alcohol-fuelled celebrations with students after Haileybury College took out a school football premiership on the weekend.

Lloyd, who is the triumphant coach of the First XVIII team, is one of six staff members sanctioned as the elite private school goes into damage control.

The school moved quickly after learning the six employees – including two academic staff – had attended a student party after they clinched the APS premiership.

Lloyd was absent from his regular spot on Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show the next day.

“So was the game interstate or something? Is that why he’s not here?” Nathan Brown asked.

“No, it’s because he had two Bacardi Breezers and he’s got a hangover,” host Tony Jones said.

Lloyd was back on Footy Classified on Monday night with his co-panellists mentioning his post-match drinking.

“The Vodka Cruisers would have been flowing freely on Saturday night, good call, bad call?” Caroline Wilson asked Damian Barrett.

“Good call – and the Bacardi Breezers,” Barrett responded.

Lloyd then said, “it was one of the greatest days he’s had in his football career.”

In a statement, Haileybury College said they have disciplined staff involved and will take further action if necessary.

“It was with great disappointment that the school learnt that several members of staff attended this event,” it said.

“The school has moved quickly to discipline those staff members involved and will take further action if necessary.”

Parents pay more than $34,000 a year to send their children to the prestigious school.
