Almost 5000 Ford vehicles recalled due to software issue

Thousands of Ford vehicles have been recalled over fears a software issue could cause injury or death.

The defect affects almost 5000 Ford Rangers and Ford Everests made between 2021 and 2023.

According to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, if the vehicle’s battery level drops below a “critical threshold”, the transmission may shift into Park when the car is travelling below 6km/h.

This would cause the car to stop suddenly and would mean the rear brake lights would not light up as they usually would when a car is braking.

“(This) could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users,” the department said.

Ford will contact affected owners asking them to make an appointment to repair the issue.

The work will be carried out free of charge.
