Android owners receive free Google AI upgrade that can write emails and pick your dinner – and iPhones will be next

ANDROID owners are able to get a major free Google AI upgrade that can write emails and even select your dinner.

Apple users won’t be too far behind as the Google app for iOS is expected to get an update in the “coming weeks”.

The US tech company’s artificial intelligence solution Gemini has already been available on some of the top end Android phones in some regions but now it is coming to the UK and Europe.

Google’s Group Product Manager Jules Walter wrote in a blog post about just how AI can improve the user experiences.

He said: “With the Gemini app on your phone, you can type, talk or add an image for all kinds of help”, using the example that “you can take a picture of your flat tyre and ask for instructions on how to change it”.

To get going, you need to get the Gemini app –  which can be downloaded from Google’s Store here.

Once installed, user can get going by corner-swiping, saying “hey Google” to activate the assistant.

On some Android phones, if you have customised the button, it can also be activated by hitting the power button – on some devices this will be by default.

Walter added that by doing the above it “will enable a new overlay experience that offers easy access to Gemini, as well as contextual help right on your screen”.

Apple is rumoured to have invested heavily in building its own AI features, as Android forges ahead with the Google Gemini chatbot and Samsung’s Galaxy AI camera boost.

It comes as reports say Apple is days away from unveiling iOS 18 – which is slated to be the ‘biggest’ iPhone update in the company’s history.

The Silicon Valley giant will hold its annual WWDC Developers Conference at its California HQ next week, where it is expected to show off new iOS 18 features.

Apple v Android: Inside the rivalry

iOS 18 won’t officially land on iPhones until autumn.

But the beta version of the software – designed for a limited number of iPhone owners to test – will be unleashed on 10 June, according to MacRumors.

The next big iPhone update – codenamed Crystal – “will have ambitious changes all around,” Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi told employees earlier this year, per a Bloomberg report.

Much of those ambitious changes centre around new features powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

A new and improved Siri that uses generative AI is one of the most anticipated updates in iOS 18.

This is the same AI technology that is used in the likes of ChatGPT that allows the chatbot to respond to questions like it is a human.

In Apple Music, AI could also be used to create “auto-generated playlists”, according to the report.

Last month, Google made a huge change to its popular search engine by infusing AI into the results.

The tech giant announced it will start showing AI-generated answers after an initial trial in the UK and US.

It means answers to questions will appear at the top on the search result page instead of a list of links.

Google said the feature has already been used billions of times in the experimental phase but now it’s being rolled out widely.
