Apple users warned about fake update that steals money, passwords on Safari and Chrome

Apple users are being warned about a fake update that infects computers with a malware to steal their money and passwords.

The fake browser campaign, dubbed ClearFake by tech experts, first popped up in July and targeted Windows systems to distribute Atomic Stealer, a dangerous malware that steals user information.

Now, experts say the campaign has expanded to macOS systems, prompting an urgent warning for Apple users.

The malware, also referred to as AMOS, uses a fake Chrome update prompt that appears on breached sites with JavaScript infections, according to Bleeping Computer.

Cybersecurity company Malwarebytes researchers this week discovered AMOS was targeting Mac users through the ClearFake fake browser update chain.

“ClearFake is a newer malware campaign that leverages compromised websites to distribute fake browser updates,” the company said in its latest security blog.

The report said recent upgrades to the malware made it “one of the most prevalent and dangerous social engineering schemes”.

Cybercriminals are now also using a fake Safari page, as well as the standard Chrome dupe, experts said.

After choosing to update, victims are prompted to open a fake file that has been downloaded, which immediately runs commands after asking for the user’s password.

The system can then steal passwords to important accounts; access photos, documents and video files; and even hack data from more than 50 cryptocurrency extensions.

Experts advise Mac users to steer clear of downloading browser updates from third-party sites and pop-ups.
