At $5,000, Could This 2003 Dodge Durango R/T Be A Good Deal?

The ad for today’s Nice Price or No Dice Durango boasts that it is a 3X undefeated MoparMania Champ and identifies the truck as the “Silverback.” Let’s see if this custom, lifted 4X4 can chalk up another win in our voting.

There was a lot of interest in the archeological expedition offered by last Friday’s barn find 1966 Datsun 411. And, while Indiana Jones is not above stealing antiquities “for the museum,” most of you were fine with paying the $4,000 asking price asked to disinter the Datsun. That resulted in a barn-blasting 60 percent Nice Price win.

Should you need to pull the Datsun from its resting place or perhaps tow it home for a well-deserved deep cleaning, then something like this 2003 Dodge Durango R/T might just fit the bill. After all, check out those crazy Dumbo-ear towing mirrors!

According to the ad, this custom Durango was transformed by its present owner “from bone stock” into the beast you now see. It rides on a raised suspension and wears a custom grille, headlamps, and hood, along with a roof rack, light bar, and “Silverback” sun visor on the windscreen. There are plenty of other mods as well, so many so that the seller claims they can’t even list them all.

Pulling around all that custom work is a 5.9-liter Magnum V8 and on-demand 4WD. An automatic transmission runs interference between the two, and the seller claims that the gearbox has less than 10K under its belt. Everything on the truck is said to work, right down to the heated seats and the 4×4. As an added incentive, the seller says it fires right up with just a twist of the key.

It’s not all monkeyshines here, though. The seller says that the truck has been parked for some time as it’s overly thirsty, and as a result, it apparently needs new ball joints and a battery to be safe. It’s also only painted in primer, so if that’s not your jam, you might want to consider some sort of re-shoot.

There are 190,000 miles on the truck, and aside from a nighttime shot of a stuffed gorilla in the passenger seat, we don’t get enough of a peek at the interior to see how it has faired over that distance. There’s also no word on whether or not the gorilla comes with the truck. The truck does come with a clean title and perhaps all those trophies. The seller says that a family emergency is what is driving the sale.

That sale demands $5,000, and the seller asks prospective buyers to “not waste their time” with annoying lowball bids. What do you think about this award-winning Durango and that $5,000 asking price? Does that feel like a solid deal, considering all the work that has gone into it? Or does that price have you thinking this is a gorilla that should be missed?

You decide!
