Prayagraj: Following the violence, witnessed on the campus of Allahabad University on Wednesday after the death of a student of the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), Ashutosh Dubey, the varsity administration has submitted an application to the Colonelganj police for lodging an FIR in the matter.
They have also named five individuals who, as claimed by the varsity administration, were indulged in Wednesday’s violence.
Meanwhile, AU authorities also took stock of the damage caused by the unrest. A team visited all the departments and facilities to note down the damage caused by protesting student leaders on Wednesday.
Worth mentioning that a group of student leaders indulged in large-scale violence on the campus while staging their protest on the death of Ashutosh Dubey. These agitated student leaders went to different departments and damaged the properties of the departments.
Meanwhile, the teaching faculty members of AU were asked to leave the campus by 3:00 pm because of security concerns. The notice signed by the registrar, Prof NK Shukla, mentions that the same has been done on the directives of the vice-chancellor.
“The teachers were asked to leave the campus by 3:00 pm keeping in mind the security concerns arising out of Wednesday’s incident”, said AU’s public relation officer (PRO), Prof Jaya Kapoor. She also added that assessing the damage to the university property is a routine matter.
The protesting student leaders on their part took out a candle procession on Thursday evening, showing their solidarity towards the deceased student. The procession started from union hall and marched beside the VC’s office, left the Arts faculty from library gate and culminated at Balson crossing.
“It is very disheartening that on the one hand one of our fellow student has lost his life due to the callous attitude of the AU administration and on the second when we are protesting in a non-violent Gandhian way, the varsity is falsely implicating me”, said Ajay Yadav ‘Samrat’, the student leader who has been blamed by the AU administration to ploy Wednesday’s unrest on the campus.
The Allahabad University Teachers Association (AUTA) also held a meeting on Wednesday evening and after serious deliberations passed some resolutions unanimously condemning the violence. They have demanded that the police administration should arrest the persons involved by Friday failing which all the teachers of AU will sit on hunger strike in front of the Police Commissioner, Prayagraj’s office.
“In protest against the incident and till the culprits are arrested, all the teachers would wear black ribbons”, said AUTA president, Prof AR Siddiqui.
In another development, the former president of the AU student union, Richa Singh has said that she will be filing a PIL in the matter pertaining to the death of the student. “The important question is that every time a new vice-chancellor arrives in the university, new vehicles are purchased, but how many ambulances have the university bought so far, which are equipped with life support systems. It is a matter of grave concern and I will be writing to the Prime Minister’s office and the President about this”.
