Australia Post to deliver on weekends to handle Christmas ‘online shopping surges’

Australia Post has announced it will now begin weekend deliveries in the lead-up to Christmas, to make sure parcels arrive on time.

The temporary boost in deliveries will begin this Saturday in all metro capitals and some regional cities and towns amid the expected surge of parcels during the holiday season.

“We’ve been preparing for another big sales and festive season, including recruiting thousands of additional team members,” Australia Post executive general manager Gary Starr said.

Customers will also be given more delivery options, such as the opportunity to collect deliveries that have been missed from free 24/7 Australia Post parcel lockers instead of the post office.

“We delivered 52 million parcels last December, and we’re expecting another huge peak season ahead,” Starr said.

Australia Post says the popularity of cyber sales events has driven the spike in deliveries.

“As the sales events ramp up and online shopping surges in the lead-up to Christmas, our temporary Saturday and Sunday service is just another way we are supporting our customers at the busiest time of the year,” Starr said.

Weekend deliveries will remain in place until Christmas.

Australia Post advises Australians to send domestic parcels by December 18, so they arrive by Christmas, or by December 21 if they are sent via Express Post.

Those sending parcels from Western Australia and Northern Territory to other parts of the country should allow a few extra days.
