Automakers Need To Stop Cheaping Out On Automatic Window Switches

I understand that building cars is an expensive proposition, and it is inevitable that costs will need to be cut somewhere, but goddamn do they need to cut costs by getting rid of automatic window switches?

In the year of our Lord 2024, there is no reason all four of a car’s windows should not be automatic one-touch up and down. Yet, I keep finding myself having to hold the switch either up or down to get them where I want them. Is this a small and inconsequential first-world problem that only I am riled up about? Maybe.

It just screams of cheapness in a way that only blank buttons and hard plastic touchpoints do. If I’m in a car, I want to be able to raise or lower all four windows with the simple click of a few buttons. It’s so silly that I’ve got to hold them up or down. We’ve got the technology, and it’s not like there’s a microchip shortage anymore.

Honestly, the new move that is annoying me even more than just not having one-touch up and down is when a switch will just have one of those features. I’m looking at you, General Motors. At this point, most GM vehicle have auto up and down for the driver, and then the passenger and the two rear windows are saddled with just auto down. Are they trying to torture me in a very specific way?

I’m a big fan of rolling all the windows down when the weather is nice, and I just feel like such a dumb goober when I’ve got to hold to put the front two windows down and then the back two. There’s a better way, folks. Yes, I’m lazy. I don’t care.

Maybe you could claim its some sort of safety issue, but that argument doesn’t hold any water. If one-touch windows were really that unsafe they wouldn’t be on any car, but they are. If they’re safe enough for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, they’re safe enough for everyone.

Listen, I know that there are bigger issues in the world. Hell, there are way bigger issues in the automotive world, but this is my post, and I must use my position for good. Trust me, this isn’t my only insignificant automotive gripe. I’ve got plenty more of them, and if you want to hear them, let me know. Maybe I’ll turn this into a series or something.
