Ava Zempilas, 12, earns State call-up for basketball and netball

At just 12 years old, Ava Zempilas has the world in her hands after earning a State call-up for both basketball and netball.

The passionate young athlete will compete in School Sports WA’s 2023 championships for basketball later this month and then for netball a few weeks later.

Ava said after learning she had been selected for basketball, she was unsure she would have time to compete in the netball championships as well.

But with the support of her prominent parents, Amy and City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas, her coaches and teammates and teachers at St Hilda’s Anglican School, she decided to give both a go.

“I’m very proud of my achievements and honoured to play for my State in both sports,” she said.

“It is taking up a lot of time, but I have other commitments with basketball and netball at a district and association level that keep me busy and keep my skills up.”

Ava — who plays as a small forward in basketball and in defence for netball — said she was considering a career as a professional athlete but at this stage was keeping her options open.

“I’ve always had a passion for sport and getting on the court is something I look forward to,” she said.

“I love challenging myself and improving my skills, plus it is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.”

Mr Zempilas said his daughter had been through a rigorous process to earn the selections and while there was quite a lot of juggling involved, both teams were supportive and flexible.

“The whole family is very proud. Both Amy and I encouraged her to go for it,” he said.

“To have made two teams in one year is fantastic. The chance to play for both is probably not going to present again in her lifetime, so it’s great she is giving it a go.”
