Bad Bunny Goes Dark in Maison Margiela Suit at Met Gala 2024

Bad Bunny was among the first to arrive to the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, wearing bespoke Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano and custom Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela Tabi boots.

Florals were expected this year, given the dress code, “The Garden of Time,” taken from J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name; Bad Bunny took inspiration — with help from Galliano — holding a black barathea wool flower bouquet. His elegant and poetic ensemble was composed of a midnight blue barathea wool smoking with black grosgrain lapels and red silk ribbon inseam lampasse, worn over a custom-made black satin corset. The look was complete with a foam hat enveloped in midnight blue stocking material, sunglasses and black leather gloves.

“You can’t really improvise for the Met,” Bad Bunny said when asked about his process for choosing his Met Gala outfit during Vogue’s 73 Questions series. “If I want to attend a different red carpet and decide to wear boxers last minute, I do it. I just do it.”

For the Met, it took planning with Galliano, who’s been Maison Margiela’s creative director since 2014. (The avant-garde fashion house was founded in Paris in 1988.)

The 30-year-old Puerto Rican music star was on double duty as guest (it’s his third time attending) and serving as a cochair of the event, joined by Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala, an annual fashion event that takes place on the first Monday in May, coincides with the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute latest exhibit; this year it’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” unveiling about 250 garments and accessories from the past 400 years “united by iconography related to nature,” notes the museum.
