A Bali tourist who claimed a money exchange teller had cut her short when changing the currency over has confronted the woman in dramatic footage posted to social media.
Travellers have since been warned about the scam plaguing the island after the footage emerged.
There are claims a money exchange teller on the south-east of the island in Sanur tried to pocket an amount of Indonesian Rupiah from a female tourist.
Footage posted to Instagram account deck_sotto shows the tourist heading inside HoneyWhiskey Tailors to confront the teller after realising she had been short-changed.
According to The Bali Sun, the tourist was accompanied by her host as she entered the store who can be heard arguing with the teller.
The teller can be heard saying: “Sorry you give me one mil’ less, not enough. You give me four not five.”
“This video was sent to me by my friend Mr. Tako. The guest who stayed at his homestay exchanged some money in a money changer (which I believe is a wild money changer without permission), and the money received does not match the nominal agreed,” the Instagram caption read.
“This is a dirty classic (trick) that seems to be ‘protected’ in Sanur, and it harms tourists and certainly tarnishes the tourism image.”
The common scam occurs when an exchange teller changes currency over, counts the correct notes in front of the tourist so it’s all correct but then very quickly swipes some notes before handing it over to the traveller.
Tourists are reminded to always count the cash out again on the countertop before leaving the currency exchange kiosk and should contact the police if they suspect they’ve been scammed.
The warning comes after reports of card skimming devices found on ATMs across the island, with fresh reminders to only use cash machines directly connected to a bank.
