Basil Zempilas: As we grapple with the nuclear question, let’s trust in science

1. There is no excuse for what tradie Mat Radelic allegedly did up in Broome this week. You can not physically restrain a six-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy with cable ties. You just can not. The 45-year-old has since spoken of his regret, the spontaneity of his actions and the exasperation he feels, both at his own conduct and also the broader social circumstances in the town. But the kids were six and seven years old, you can’t do that to kids. Broome has always been kind to WA holiday-makers, right now the tropical paradise needs our love and attention.

2. For those unsure or suspicious about the role nuclear power could or should play in Australia’s energy future, John Howard reminds us of a need to “trust the science”. To paraphrase the 25th prime minister in his book A Sense of Balance, Howard says climate change advocates rightly urge sceptics to trust or accept the science when it comes to debating climate, so it is only fair that same standard be applied in the debate around nuclear energy. Nuclear power is used safely in 30 countries including the US, the UK and Canada. The science hasn’t let them down.
