Bengal Governor sends strong message on violence

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Wednesday gave a strong message on violence and said strong action will be required to “end the culture of violence” in the state. He was talking in the context of the recent violence in South 24 Parganas district’s Joynagar where a Trinamool leader was murdered and several houses of CPI-M workers were set ablaze.

While addressing a programme in Raj Bhawan today, the Governor said, “Not only legal action but it also needs social action. We certainly should try our best to see that the culture of violence ends. Arson and looting, intimidation and murder- these are all parts of the crime which is prevailing in certain places here. Strong action is required and strong action will be taken.”

Reacting to Governor’s comments, Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen said, “Sometimes the Governor wakes up and makes the comments.”

Two persons, including a Trinamool Congress Area President, were murdered in South 24 Parganas District’s Joynagar on Monday morning. Major row broke out as several houses of CPI-M supporters in the adjoining villages were set ablaze and ransacked, in retaliation of the alleged death of the Trinamool leader. CPI-M leadership have claimed that their supporters were not allowed to return to their homes after they had left the villages following the violence.
