Best mobile plans: Telstra doesn’t want you to know this secret

Australia’s largest telco operates the country’s largest mobile network, it covers 99.6 per cent of the population.

However, it also has some of the most expensive prepaid and postpaid plans. But there’s a way to reap the rewards of being on the Telstra network without paying top dollar.

See, Telstra (as well as Optus and Vodafone) lease their networks to smaller brands, officially Mobile Virtual Network Operators or MVNOs. These MVNOs operate at a much lower cost than the big three telcos, which means they can offer cheaper plans.

For Telstra coverage, this includes Boost Mobile, Tangerine, MATE, ALDI Mobile and others. Only Boost offers the exact same coverage as Telstra, the rest cover 98.8 per cent of the population. That’s just the fringes of the Telstra network that you’d miss out on and it’s still more coverage than Optus or Vodafone.
