Big W Mirrabooka: Love found among the shelves as department store reaches 45th anniversary

Pierina Hastie had no idea that the W in Big W stood for wedding when she started work with the department store in 1989.

Mrs Hastie started work at the Mirrabooka store in February 1989, where she met her future husband, Gary.

Mr Hastie was a department manager, while Mrs Hastie took care of the confectionery section.

“I’ve made many amazing friends and love being able to share my journey alongside my children.”

The Mirrabooka store recently celebrated its 45th anniversary after opening in 1978.

Its architecture harks back to the design of the original Big W establishments, featuring a prominent yellow hue and cream fixtures at eye level.

In its early days, Mirrabooka Big W carried a diverse array of products, spanning white goods, hardware and paint, while even housing an in-house mechanic shop and an extensive cafeteria.

“Reaching 45 years is truly an extraordinary accomplishment for the store and is a testament to past and current team members who have worked here,” store manager Elisha Edwards said.

And for those who don’t know, the W really stands for Woolworths.
