Bihar Government: Bihar government suspends plus two-intermediate classes in colleges |

The Bihar government has announced the suspension of plus two (intermediate) classes in colleges affiliated with various universities across the state. According to agency reports, in a notification issued late Wednesday evening, the Education Department stated that, while these classes were discontinued at Patna University about a decade ago, the practice will now be discontinued at colleges affiliated with other universities beginning with the academic session in April of this year.
According to the notification, intermediate education in all three streams (arts/humanities, science, and commerce) will now be taught only in higher secondary schools beginning with the new session.
The department also stated that the Universities Act includes a proposal to separate intermediate (plus two) from colleges. However, enforcement has been hampered so far due to insufficient infrastructure and manpower in higher secondary schools.
The resolution on this matter has already been published in the state gazette. In 2007, the Nitish Kumar government made a policy decision to gradually phase out intermediate education from colleges in accordance with the National Education Policy (1986/92). As a result, the 10+2 format was implemented for plus two education.
According to the notification, the department has already built extensive infrastructure and hired 67,961 teachers for higher secondary schools, as well as an additional 65,737 teachers for secondary schools through a special initiative. As a result, government schools are now adequately prepared to provide plus two education.
Previously, the Bihar government had enacted a policy to set up one higher secondary school in each panchayat. This initiative involved elevating existing secondary schools to fulfill the demands of higher secondary education. The objective was to broaden access to high-quality education at the higher secondary level throughout the state, consequently enhancing educational infrastructure and prospects for students in rural regions.
