And that’s left a vacancy at Birmingham City – who are thought likely to face Rangers in a pre-season friendly to honour the passing of Trevor Francis this summer.

And now the Telegraph is reporting that former Hamilton Accies, Preston, Norwich, Stoke City and Sunderland boss Neil could be the man to take over at the helm.

Neil, who has also been linked with the vacancy at Hibs, is one of the most successful serving Scottish managers out there.

Still only 42, he’s been out of top flight management since being sacked by Stoke in December, with the Potteries side languishing in the lower reaches of the Championship.
