Guntur: AP Neuro Scientists Association (APNSA) president, Dr. P. Vijaya explained that brain-related disorders are the leading cause of disability and 2nd leading cause of death. She observed that although it is common for everyone to face brain-related issues, it is important to treat them at the right time to save their life.
World Brain Day is observed on July 22 to raise awareness about neurological disorders. The theme proposed by the World Federation of Neurology and adopted by the Indian Academy of Neurology for the year 2023 is Brain Health and Disability–Leave No One Behind.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Dr Vijaya said that AP Neuroscientists Association is organising many programs to mark the occasion to create awareness on brain health in Lalitha Super Specialty Hospital and educational institutions and social media on Saturday. “According to WHO, there are more than 100 crore people living with neurological-related disability across the world.
The incidence of common brain diseases is brain stroke 42.2%, Migraine 16.3%, Dementia 10.4%, Meningitis 7.9%, and epilepsy 4.9%. The other important diseases are Cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, Peripheral neuropathy, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury,” said Dr Vijaya.
She, however, said that many of the neurological-related disorders can be prevented, treated and rehabilitated with proper brain health awareness and education. “Brain health is vital for mental, social and physical wellbeing. The tips to protect our brain are a balanced diet, regular physical activity, restful sleep, healthy lifestyle, positive thoughts and hobbies that keep the body and mind active,” commented Dr.Vijaya.
