BRICS divisions re-emerge ahead of critical expansion debate

The BRICS summit is currently taking place in Johannesburg from August 22-24. The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are meeting to discuss the future of the bloc and potentially expand its membership. China and Russia are seeking to strengthen BRICS to counter Western dominance in global institutions. China’s President Xi Jinping, although absent from the event, emphasized the importance of the choices made by the bloc in shaping the course of history. The leaders will also discuss the use of local currencies in trade to reduce dependency on the US dollar. However, there are divisions within the group, with Brazil stating that they don’t want to be seen as a rival to the G7 or the United States. The expansion of BRICS has long been a goal for China and Russia, although India has expressed caution. Over 40 countries have shown interest in joining BRICS, with nearly two dozen formally requesting admission. Argentina, despite expressing interest, is not expected to be admitted during this summit.
