Cal Wilson’s seven funniest comedy moments

Comedian, performer, actor, presenter — when it came to making us laugh, Cal Wilson was one of this country’s most versatile talents.

Whether it was making contestants feel comfortable on Great Australian Bake Off, knocking people’s socks off at comedy festivals, fashioning a crazy headdress, or buzzing in with a quick retort on Would I Lie To You? or Have You Been Paying Attention?, the NZ-born performer made it all look so easy.

Wilson died on Wednesday after a short illness, prompting a flood of tributes.

Cal Wilson on The Great Australian Bake Off

Wilson joined Bake Off this year and absolutely nailed the brief, providing comic relief, a shoulder to lean on, and a willing set of tastebuds to sample the bakers’ delights.

“Cal joined our Bake Off cast last year and instantly brought her unique sparkle to the show”, Foxtel’s group general manager, Wendy Moore said in a statement.

“Her professionalism, work ethic and genuine heartwarming humour instantly made her a favourite amongst cast and crew, as well as the Australian audience.”

The 53-year-old performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 14 times and was a crowd favourite. She also toured the country, most recently popping to Perth for a gig at the Rechabite.

Cal Wilson’s crazy headdresses

Some of Wilson’s funniest comedy came via her social media accounts — especially during lockdown, when she entertained her followers by fashioning elaborate headdresses from household objects.

One of her fabulous creations was immortalised this year by artist Andrea Huelin, whose painting won the prestigious Packing Room Prize at this year’s Archibald art awards.
