ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Mikaela Warr, Canyon, Senior

Canyon sprinter Mikaela Warr was confident throughout the high school track and field season that she was going to win a CIF State title. She convinced herself of it through all of the Sunday workouts when she and her teammates were exhausted, and through the meets that she didn’t win.

“I was preparing myself in different meets leading up to state,” she said. “I wouldn’t win all the time, so I just had to be like, just wait until you get to finals and show out. It was all helping me for state. I knew I was going to win state. I was determined to win state.”

Warr clocked a personal record of 11.41 seconds in the 100 meters at the CIF State championships to win Canyon’s first state individual title since 2004.

In addition to her 100-meters success, Warr also qualified for the state prelims in the 200 and as the leadoff runner on the school’s 4×100 relay.

“I didn’t make it (to finals) in the 200, so in the 100 I really wanted to win and run a PR time,” she said. “That was really motivating. I was focused to do that.”

Warr was training six days a week in addition to meet days at one point in the season and ran alongside the boys, who pushed her to achieve better times. The distractions of graduating high school and moving on to San Diego State, where she’s committed to run, were kept at arm’s length.

She won the 100 at the Redondo Nike Track Festival and finished fourth in the event and third in the 200 at the Arcadia Invitational. She won the 100 at the CIF-SS finals and was third in the 200 in the same meet to qualify for the state meet in Clovis.

Now that high school track season is over, she’s free to focus on college and beyond — she’s a 2028 Olympic hopeful.

“I appreciate my mom, my coach for all the hard work and all the late hours they put in and the money and the sacrifice,” Warr said. “I appreciate my teammates for always being there for me and I’m very proud of myself for how far I’ve come since freshman year until now.

“I’ve really completed all my goals. I did everything I said I was going to do this year.”
