NEW YORK (AP) — Carl Weathers, a former NFL linebacker who later became a Hollywood action movie and comedy star, has passed away at the age of 76. He was best known for his role as the nemesis-turned-ally Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies, as well as his roles in “Predator” and “Happy Gilmore.”
Weathers’ manager, Matt Luber, confirmed his death, stating that he passed away peacefully in his sleep. His family issued a statement confirming the news as well.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, who co-starred with Weathers in “Predator,” called Weathers an extraordinary athlete, a fantastic actor, and a great person. Stallone also paid tribute to Weathers, acknowledging his integral role in his success and impact on his career.
Weathers’ most iconic role, Apollo Creed, made its first appearance in 1976 in “Rocky,” and remained a significant part of his career. He also appeared in the Disney+ hit “The Mandalorian” as well as several other films and TV shows over the years.
Weathers’ career included dominating roles in several notable films, such as “Predator,” “Action Jackson,” and “Happy Gilmore.” He was also praised for his TV appearances and voice acting work, earning an Emmy Award nomination in 2021. He was admired by many as a true legend who left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
