Baldivis angler Ash Parnham joined his father-in-law for a trip out in Jurien Bay.
They headed out in the latter’s aluminium 5m centre console, with their main task to check some craypots.
The pots were in 10m of water just south of Favourite Island, but didn’t produce quite the bonanza they hoped.
The pair ended up with 10 crays — many others had black spots and were released.
They decided to have a fish while they were out there and it paid immediate dividends.
Ash was using fresh octopus as bait, on a standard paternoster rig.
On the second drop, he came up trumps with a solid baldchin groper.
With that in the boat, plus their haul of crays, they decided it was time to head back in.
Ash said locals told him it was one of the biggest local baldies they’d seen, so he was very chuffed with his catch.
A great day on the water and Ash has also won a Shimano lure wrap tackle box, which he can pick up from any of WA’s three Compleat Angler and Camping World stores, and is in the running to win the monthly prize of a Shimano combo.
