A family camping trip to Augusta allowed teenager Daniel Page to enjoy some south coast fishing.
During their stay, the 15-year-old spent a day on the Blackwood River with his family in a hire dinghy.
They set off in the morning from the Old Town Jetty, heading up to Molloy Island.
Encountering the local dolphins along the way it wasn’t long before they found a promising fishing spot along the river’s edge, where some fallen trees provided perfect fishy structure.
After some fun catching and releasing small to mid-size bream on light gear, the family decided to move to another spot which had a small beach where they could land, stretch their legs and have some lunch.
After a quick feed, Daniel was soon casting from the shore hoping to catch some bigger specimens.
After not much action he suggested moving to another spot, but the family consensus was to stay a bit longer and soak up the scenery.
Shortly after some bigger bream arrived to add a bit of excitement.
It was this after-lunch session and decision to stay which paid dividends, when Daniel’s rod bent over and line screamed from his reel following an initial run by what was obviously a much better fish.
After carefully playing his catch for about two minutes, which included an effort in pulling the fish from one of the snags along the edges, Daniel’s patience was rewarded with a magnificent black bream measuring 36cm.
“Oh my days, it’s massive!” was his reaction.
Well done Daniel and he has also won a Shimano lure wrap tackle box, which he can pick up from any of WA’s three Compleat Angler and Camping World stores, plus he’s in the running to win the monthly prize of a Shimano combo.
Robble Skelton won the Shimano combo for January for the catch of the month with his pink snapper.
