Ross Merlino and some friends headed to San Remo, near Mandurah, for an evening fish.
They were waiting for sunset and started to fish, but the tailor were not biting.
With just one tailor caught, they were getting ready to leave as the sun set below the horizon.
The group packed up to leave and some departed, but Ross fortuitously decided to have one more cast before heading home.
He’d spent most of the afternoon teaching his grandson, Hudson O’Brien, how to fish, including baiting up his hooks.
Ross was using a mulie on ganged hooks, with a running sinker rig.
As soon as the bait hit the water, it was hit hard and the unseen opponent started to take off up the beach.
Everyone called it for a stingray at first, or a small shark, which prompted a conversation as to who would take the hook out.
Ross played the fish expertly for 20 minutes and to the surprise of all landed a whopper of a mulloway.
It was 1.16m long and weighed in at 15kg.
Ross has also won a Shimano lure wrap tackle box, which he can pick up from any of WA’s three Compleat Angler and Camping World stores, and is in the running to win the monthly prize of a Shimano combo.
