Chemical spill off truck causes section of Rockingham Road in Kwinana to shut

A chemical spill has closed down a section of Rockingham Road with people in the area urged to stay inside.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services were called to Rockingham Road near the intersection of Anketell Road about 1.40pm on Tuesday after chemicals fell off a truck.

The chemical has been identified as sodium hydroxide — a common ingredient in cleaning products that can cause severe skin burns and eye damage.

The spill has caused DFES to set up a warning zone all the way from Wattleup to East Rockingham.

Motorists are urged to find an alternative route due to Rockingham Road southbound between Beard Street and Anketell Road being closed as crews work to clean up the spill.

Emergency Services personnel are expected to remain there for several hours.

WorkSafe chief dangerous goods officer Iain Dainty said there was an officer on the scene overseeing the clean up.

“The WorkSafe officer is assisting the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to manage the incident,” he said.

Anketell Road eastbound between Rockingham Road to Abercrombie Road is also shut. There is no access to Anketell Road from Armstrong Road.

People in the area have been urged to remain inside with doors and windows closed and air cons switched off.

Anyone with medical concerns should contact their doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
