Who is Chey Tae-won?
Chey is the Chairman of South Korea’s sprawling SK Group, which owns South Korea’s leading mobile carrier and also controls SK Hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chip maker. The court assessed Chey’s net wealth and found it to be around four trillion won. Roh So-young will take 35 percent of it in the settlement.
SK group shares
The verdict of the high court is also significant because it ruled that shares of the SK group should be considered joint property. Earlier, the family court turned down Roh’s request that she be given a part of Chey’s SK shares.
Delivering its verdict on Thursday, the Seoul High Court said that Chey had not shown “any signs of remorse for his foul behavior in the course of the trial… nor respect for monogamy”. It also said the new settlement took into account Roh’s suffering over her ex-husband’s extramarital affair.
“Roh Tae-woo helped Chey”
The court said that Roh had helped ease regulatory hurdles for Chey’s business and that her father, former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, had “played the role of a protective shield” for SK’s ex-chairman Chey Jong-Hyun. Countering this, Chey’s lawyers argued that on the contrary, his ex-wife’s political connections enhancing his business had been a disadvantage.Roh Tae-woo was elected president in the 1987 polls, South Korea’s first free and fair election in more than a decade. Earlier, he had helped his military academy friend Chun Doo-hwan stage a military coup and take over as a dictator.
