Children scrambled to fill their baskets with Easter eggs on Saturday in Winnetka – Daily News

A “Giant Easter Egg Hunt” delighted families with young children on Saturday, March 30 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Winnetka, and the intermittent rain didn’t dampen their enthusiasm.

Children, by age groups, scrambled for the more than 2,000 eggs — filled with treats — that they plopped into their Easter baskets.

The free event had a few changes this year due to an anticipated rainstorm — the opening ceremony performances by “The Band” and by the church’s preschool children, and the Rev. Gregory Barth’s welcome and prayer were held indoors.

“The Easter Egg Hunt is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to our community and bring families together for a joyous event and to share the love of Jesus at Easter,” wrote the Rev. Gregory Barth in an email before the event.

The Easter egg hunt usually has an estimated 200 children and their parents, said the event’s organizer Allison Schimke, family ministries director at the church. The event has been held for more than 25 years at the church that opened its doors in September 1957.

The free lunch held outdoors after the egg hunt was cancelled.
