I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not crazy about going to the gym. But lately one actor’s outfits have me reconsidering my stance. Your mind may immediately jump to a trendy two-piece spandex set, or perhaps even a Jane Fonda-inspired moment. But no, my workout-wear inspo these days is none other than Chris Pine.
Per a paparazzi agency, Pine has repeatedly been spotted at a dance studio in Los Angeles. (Anyone who saw the Don’t Worry Darling actor’s balletic Esquire shoot knows that the man’s got moves.) To match his locale, Pine’s style as of late has been giving full-fledged off-duty ballerina. Personally, I’m obsessed.
A Chris Pine workout outfit goes as such: a graphic tee or tank top worn with the ittiest, bittiest short-shorts (often over leggings), a delightful cardigan, and either clogs or sandals. Some days—if we’re lucky—he’ll add a Richie Tenenbaum-esque flair with a striped sweatband and a pair of aviator glasses.

During a rather unsteady press tour for Don’t Worry Darling, Pine took some of the pressure off of the film’s dramatic origins with his fresh blonde bob, memeable facial expressions, and by photographing Florence Pugh on the Venice Film Festival red carpet with gusto. Surely, we all hope that rich personality translates to real life, and his athletic-wear is sustaining that hope.
While he’s a fairly private guy, Pine’s eclectic collection of graphic tanks give us a little insight into his life: his delightful PBS shirt indicates that he is a lifelong learner (he went to Berkeley, after all), and his Bob’s Big Boy shirt perhaps points to a beloved restaurant, given that the Los Angeles native grew up so close to the one in Burbank, California.

Also of note is his envy-inspiring cardigan collection—the man loves a shawl collar. A particular favorite of his—and mine—is his rainbow striped smoking jacket from The Elder Statesman. While the piece retails for $1,795, Pine pairs the loud knit with his workout wear, giving it an air of nonchalance. “Oh, this old thing? I just pulled it out of my closet.” The same could be said of his multicolored Ralph Lauren sweaters. And as for his footwear collection, we can always count on Pine to find an unexpected choice: a pair of marigold colored Birkenstocks, black rubber clogs, and brown woven slip-ons are all in the rotation—nary a Samba in sight.
Any dancer knows that wearing what makes you feel your best will only help your dancing. Chris Pine, it seems, has mastered that formula. While everyone’s workout wear preferences are different, his jubilant collection of graphic tank tops and colorful knitwear almost makes me want to try it for myself. See you at the barre, Chris!
