Christmas tradition in jeopardy as Australia faces shortage of Santas

A looming crisis could put a dampener on Christmas revelries this year amid warnings of a Santa shortage.

Traditional family photos with Santa were put on hold during Covid, and have struggled to bounce back.

Santa agency Scene To Believe said they were struggling to bring back talent numbers as December looms.

Managing Director Stefan Hutton urged Australians looking for casual Christmas work to don the red suit.

“Posing for a photo with Santa is an annual tradition for families everywhere,” Mr Hutton told Nine News.

“We have fantastic roles available across the country for … grandparents to retirees and in between.”

Beginning in mid-November, Santa roles pay between $30-34 an hour for five hour shifts during the week.

Scene to Believe, a performance talent agency, currently has dozens of Santa’s Helper jobs vacant as well.

The job, billed as being the “messenger of happiness”, has roles available across the country, according to Seek.

No photography experience is required, with Working Holiday Visa holders also encouraged to apply.

Santa veteran Tony Hooper said being Santa was perfect for older Australians returning to the workforce.

“Being a Santa is by far the best work I’ve ever done,” Mr Hooper told Nine News.

“I work when I want and I spend my days talking to young families and getting in the festive spirit.

“It‘s also a great way to earn extra cash right before Christmas, which is when I need it most.”
