Her final audio message was posted on Sunday by a verified Weibo account for Lee’s Chinese fan club.

In it, she thanked her fans for their support and for giving her strength.

“I feel everyone’s love and support and you are my pillar of strength,” she said in the recording, according to Taiwan News.

“I will keep striving. During this time, I hope you all are also healthy and happy.

“I miss everyone very much. I am working very hard. I am thinking of you all.

Lee then switched to English and thanked fans for gifts they had sent her after recent leg and pelvic surgery.

“Thank you so much for the gifts,” she said.

“Beautiful and very thoughtful. Love you guys.”

Just hours later, Lee attempted to take her own life at home.

She was taken to hospital and put in a coma but never recovered.

Her final audio has since gained more than 33 million listens on Weibo, Taiwan News reported.

‘Demon inside’

Lee’s older sisters Carol and Nancy shared news of her death on Facebook.

“Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months,” they wrote.

“Although, Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”

Lee rose to fame singing the Mandarin version of the song Reflection from the Disney movie Mulan.

In the Chinese version of the film, she also voiced the lead character of Mulan.

In 2000, she had a global pop hit with the song Do You Want My Love, which reached the Top 20 in Australia.

She was the first Chinese-American singer to perform at the Oscars and the first Chanel ambassador of Chinese descent for the Asia-Pacific region.

On Thursday, award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh posted a touching tribute to Lee on her Instagram account, sharing a photograph of the two together.

Yeoh had starred in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, whose theme song Lee had performed at the Oscars.

“I am deeply saddened that we have lost a bright star,” she wrote.

“Coco was the first Chinese (American) to perform at the Oscars … we were so proud and always will be.

“You and your beautiful voice will be missed.

“RIP my dear… Heartfelt condolences to Coco’s family and all who love you.”
