Commanders fans chat ‘F–k Dan Snyder’ as Josh Harris era begins with win
The fans returned to FedEx Field in full force, the Commanders got a Week 1 win and on their way, the reenergized supporters of Washington’s NFL team had a parting message for their ex-owner.
Fans giddy over the 20-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals chanted “F–k Dan Snyder” as they exited the stadium on Sunday, according to NJ.com’s Ryan Novozinsky.
Another post on X, formerly Twitter, showed a fan wearing a Commanders’ jersey with “F Snyder” written on the back.
Snyder’s reign over the Commanders was a tumultuous period for the franchise that saw very little on-field success coupled with off-the-field scandals that included sexual harassment allegations and financial improprieties.
Snyder finally sold to a new ownership group led by Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center.
Harris was given a hero’s welcome inside FedEx Field on Sunday as fans chanted “Thank You, Josh” toward the owner’s box as he pointed back at them in appreciation.
Another video showed Harris walking through the stands and posing for photos with fans.
The new Commanders’ owner was also given the game ball after the win.
“We’re a family. That’s one. That’s one for the city, it’s all you. Thank you,” Harris told the team in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, by the Commanders.
Harris’ takeover of the Commanders has renewed the love affair in the nation’s capital with its NFL franchise.
Sunday’s season opener was sold out and saw a number of stars in the stands for the game.
That included NBA stars Joel Embiid and Kevin Durant, who is a noted Commanders fan.
“Oh man, it was amazing coming out there. I got chills standing for the National Anthem,” Commanders’ wide receiver Terry McLaurin told reporters. “To hear the roar of the crowd, I’ve been here five years now and that’s the loudest I’ve probably heard it. It’s good to get a win to hopefully keep that momentum going so the next time we’re at home we can have a similar outcome.”
