Community to save last sunset by the sea of 2024 after Town cancels popular City Beach NYE firework show

People who see in the New Year at City Beach will be doing so without a bang after confirmation that the Town of Cambridge has canned the oceanfront fireworks show.

Director of planning and community services, Luke Gibson, said higher costs would have eaten more than half of the town’s entire events budget for the year.

“Additionally, concerns about the environmental impact of fireworks influenced council’s decision,” he added.

It’s a call that has disappointed locals, including the Visit City Beach community group, which is now rallying to put in place plans for a replacement.

The NYE Sunset by the Sea celebration has been a popular community event for several years, with last year’s fireworks drawing more than 12,000 people.

Visit City Beach chair Daren Holscher hopes it could be replaced this year with a free and family friendly event with music to watch the sun set on 2024.

“The cancellation of the fireworks was a decision made by the Town of Cambridge and we are deeply disappointed given the positive response and success of this event over many years,” he said.

“We are planning a free, family friendly event that captures the essence of our community spirit, similar to our past events.

“This would involve music, a relaxed BYO family picnic, and a chance to gather with loved ones as we watch the last sunset of 2024.”

The community group has applied for funding from the Town of Cambridge and is rallying local businesses for support.

It will further discuss the plan at its annual general meeting next week, which Mr Holscher said interested locals can attend to share their ideas and suggestions.

“We’re hopeful that strong community support will guide the future of New Year’s Eve celebrations in City Beach,” he said.

“And if the community desires fireworks, we will certainly explore ways to bring them back in the future.”

The AGM is on Thursday, August 22 from 5pm at the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club.
