Creative Black Tie Remains the New Formal for Men at The Golden Globes – WWD

The 2024 awards season started with a bang sartorially speaking with the Golden Globes, as actors stepped back onto the formal fashion stage in Hollywood.

Many of the night’s best-dressed men broke with convention and adopted a new dress code of “creative black tie,” blending more casual elements borrowed from the runways, different fun textures, prints, patterns and colors, and personal style notes.

Take for instance, Jeremy Allen White’s bear brooch nodding to his role in “The Bear,” which he wore with a custom black Calvin Klein tuxedo with double-breasted wool jacket, high-waist trousers and a sheer silk voile shirt, following on the heels of the sexy ad he dropped last week for Calvin Klein underwear.

Jared Leto, who attended both the men’s and women’s Givenchy spring 2024 runway shows in Paris, opted for the brand’s black double-breasted tuxedo jacket with a shawl lapel, stark white pants and black gloves, sans shirt. And “Oppenheimer” lead Cillian Murphy chose a classic black Saint Laurent suit with a white tuxedo shirt with a popped-up collar and no tie, proving men no longer have to play by traditional black tie rules.

Others pushed sexy silhouettes.

Styled by Ilaria Urbinati, Tyler James Williams wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana broad-shouldered pin-striped suit with an organza flower brooch inspired by the spring 2024 collection. He accessorized his hourglass-shaped look with a white shirt, satin tie, and a pair of patent leather derby shoes. “I love a flare, I feel like women shouldn’t be the only ones to have flow on the red carpet,” Williams told WWD.

American singer Lenny Kravitz opted for an Alexander McQueen tailored tuxedo jumpsuit with a cutout waist from the fall 2023 collection, and finished it with Christian Louboutin shoes, Chrome Hearts diamond and gold rings and vintage ‘70s gold mesh earrings.

“The Last of Us” star Pedro Pascal, who works with stylist Julie Ragolia, chose a more casual, adventurous look from Bottega Veneta, consisting of a black sweater with white knotted details, black wool trousers, and black ankle boots (and made an arm sling look good).

Jonathan Bailey also opted for a more relaxed look — a white Givenchy double-breasted jacket with satin shawl lapel, matching wide-leg trousers, and white silk shirt.

Men on the red carpet continued to show their personality via unconventional jewelry at the Globes, too, such as Colman Domingo’s Pharrell Williams-designed brooches, Barry Keoghan’s Tifffany & Co. earrings, Louis Vuitton pearl necklace and wallet chain, and Timothée Chalamet’s Cartier Crash watch.
